Our Crazy Thanksgiving Menu (and what are YOU having?)

In the past, we have either had:
  • a traditional meal OR
  • a turkey + requested side dishes. One year, it was broccoli, mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes.
This year, I offered my family a choice:
  • One of the above choices OR
  • just something DIFFERENT. Like, lasagna. Or ANYthing, just something special we don’t normally have.
This stumped them, and I was left in silence with the four of them staring at me.
The next time we were in the grocery store, I picked up a frozen turkey and asked WHO wanted to eat this for Thanksgiving (besides me).
The four of them stared at me, and finally, the youngest said, “I’ll eat it,” with a tone of distinct reluctance. I pointedly replaced the turkey. Later, I asked an easier question to each person: What one dish do you want for dinner on Thanksgiving?
THAT they could asnwer.
And here, friends, is the proposed Thanksgiving menu:
  • Spiral sliced ham (I splurged on the extra 20 cents per pound)
  • Butter beans, cabbage, and potatoes (made in the slow cooker)
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Corn
  • Cinnamon apples

Simple. Not traditional, but a meal we can all be thankful for.

Did you notice dessert is missing? I haven’t made up my mind about that yet. I have a couple recipes for flourless chocolate cake that we all like… but the boys are currently thoroughly enjoying procesing a gigantic pumpkin into puree, and I’ve overheard talk of pie and custard. Stay tuned.
